Obituary for ANN CARMIEN SHELY

Ann Carmien Shely departed this life on September 8, 2017 at the age of 87. Ann was a wonderful and caring person to all who knew her. Born in Peoria, IL, she excelled in high school including on the debate team, which sparked a lifelong interest in public speaking. She graduated from Albion College in Michigan, married, and taught elementary school for several years. She was the mother of three children, Dr. Elizabeth Ann Shely of Newport, Kentucky, John Bruce Shely of Houston, Texas and Robert Wood Shely of Scottsdale, Arizona, all of whom survive her. She believed her most important role in this world was to be a caring and supportive mother and she was exactly that – a wonderful mother. She loved being involved in the lives of her children including school events and activities, little league baseball, vacations and quiet time with each of her children to help them grow and develop their respective interests. Ann had many friends including some she knew for the last 70 years. During her life she was an Elder for the Kirk in the Hills, on the board of the Detroit Baptist Children’s Home, and a member of PEO and other organizations. All who knew her recognized her as a compassionate and loyal friend. She had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. Ann was an avid gardener, and she became a Master Gardener. She started a floral business, Trilium, while living in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She truly had a “green thumb.” She was also an accomplished self-taught artist and enjoyed painting for her entire life. In 1989, Ann moved to Florence, Kentucky. Not surprisingly, she made many additional friends after her move. After her move to Kentucky, she enjoyed many years of companionship with her partner Bob Rackett, including much travel together around the world. While living in Kentucky, Ann was blessed with the arrival of 6 wonderful grandchildren who came to stay with her for visits and vacations on many occasions. Katherine Elizabeth Sheldon, Christine Lee Shely, Kimberly Ann Shely, Robert W. Shely Jr., Allison Rose Shely and Jenna Elaine Shely all have good memories of their time with Grandma. Ann used their visits to teach them many of the same lessons she had taught her children years before. Dressing up, skits, going to the pool and walks along the creek in her back yard were common activities of the grandchildren’s visits to Grandma’s house. And, more often than not, the visits would include taking care of a cat that Grandma had rescued. Ann had an extra soft spot in her heart for animals that needed some help. Ann was a wonderful mother, friend and colleague, and is already greatly missed. However, the legacy she left in terms of family and friends endures and made her very proud during her life. In addition to being survived by her children and grandchildren, and daughters-in-law Lynda Casterlin Shely and Kellen Wilson Shely, Ann is also survived by cousins Nancy McKay Hill and Judy Ann Barnett, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends. She is also survived by Libby Rackett Peterson and Sally Rackett Scott, and their families. Ann is also survived by Donald E. Shely, her former husband and the father of her children. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Helen Carmien, her brother Donald Charles Carmien, cousin Helen Canon Trotman, aunt Woodena Tench Stainton and niece Nancy Carmien Romanchek.
