Obituary for DAREL L. LOECHEL

Darel Louis Loechel, 66, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, KY. He was surrounded by loved ones throughout his final days.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Vicki (Palmiter) Loechel, along with five adoring children and their spouses: Shiloh (JoAnna) Loechel, Heather Loechel, Aaron (Christine) Loechel, Sharmaine (Matt) Lilleston, and Jeanette (Allen) Wilson. He was the proud grandfather of 13: Kierra, Brendon, Trey, Tyler, Christina, Dylan, Ashley, Conner, Lindsay, Ryan, Kelsey, Zachary, and Aiden. He is also survived by his sisters Karen (Jerry) Evans, and Diane (Benny) Stephens and their families, as well as Uncles Eddie Simpson, Merle Simpson, and their families.
Darel is preceded in death by his mother Lettie Lou (Simpson) Loechel, and father, George “Lucky” Loechel.
Early in his life, Darel worked on his family’s farm, and helped his father at the gas station he owned. His first job was at Johnny’s Car Wash in Erlanger, KY. Darel was a record breaking runner for the Boone County High School track team, and he competed in the state championships in the 100 meter dash and 4x100 meter relay. He met the love of his life, Vicki, while attending high school. They were high school sweethearts and got married on January 11, 1970.
Darel served in the Navy and was stationed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He also worked as a sonar technician in a submarine during Vietnam. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he began working at CSX Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio like his father before him. He rose to the rank of head clerk, and was transferred to Jacksonville, Florida for a promotion.
Darel retired from the railroad after an injury in 1991, returned to Florence, KY, and spent his time raising his children, and enjoying his hobbies. He was an electronics enthusiast and was always the first on the block to have the next big technological advancement – be it a commodore 64, an Atari, a VHS player, laser disk player, or DVD player. He was also very knowledgeable about stereo equipment and speakers, and could talk all day about his favorite setups.
Darel was a very supportive father and encouraged his children in all of their endeavors, whether it was sports, musical instruments, or hobbies. He would never miss a game, event or concert, even when working 3rd shift at the railroad, and his children truly appreciated his devotion. He was also an animal lover, always having pets in the house.
A visitation will be held Thursday, March 9th at Stiths Funeral Home in Florence, KY from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 10th at 10:00 AM at Stiths Funeral Home and a burial will be held at Williamstown Cemetery in Williamstown, KY.
