Obituary for Dr. Andrew "Andy" J. Schaeffer

Born November 18, 1944, Dr. Andrew Joseph (“Andy”) Schaeffer, DMD, passed away peacefully at home in Burlington December 30, 2021, in the loving care of his family.

Known for his endless patience, warmth, optimism and quiet generosity, Andy was for more than 50 years the devoted husband and partner of his soul mate and surviving wife, Sally A. Schaeffer (nee McEvoy). He was a model father to Andrew J. (A.J.) Schaeffer and his wife Erin, and John D. (J.D.) Schaeffer and his wife Cindi; a beloved grandfather of Allison, Sophia, Chloe, Lincoln and Samuel Schaeffer; and caring brother of his surviving siblings Clement Schaeffer and Jo Ann Bridley (Schaeffer) and the late Mary Engelland (Schaeffer) and Donald Schaeffer.

From humble beginnings, and following the death of his own father at a young age, Andy graduated from St. Henry High School. He worked tirelessly for his college and graduate school tuition in the rail yards and moving companies of Covington and Lexington, Kentucky. Andy earned his bachelors degree in Biology from Villa Madonna College (Thomas More University), and his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.

Andy’s career as a dentist was marked not only by his professionalism and enduring personal relationships with his colleagues and patients, but also by the charitable care he provided to those who could not afford it. Beyond his dental practice, Andy served as a youth soccer and basketball coach, President of the Tri City YMCA in Florence, President of the Burlington Elementary School PTA and later as a volunteer at the Sanibel Elementary School on Sanibel Island, Florida.

Andy was most “at home” on the family’s Burlington farm, where his teaching, ingenuity, work ethic and compassion were a model of devoted fatherhood and friendship. He loved Sally and his family, he cherished his neighbors and friends in Northern Kentucky and on Sanibel Island, and he was devoted to his beloved Kentucky Wildcats.

If you knew Andy Schaeffer, you know that he cared more for your well-being than his own. May our world know more souls of his character and commitment to others.
