Obituary for EVA FRANCIS BURRIS

Eva Burris, 88, of Erlanger, passed away on Monday, August 6. She was born July 30, 1924 in Norton, Virginia. A retired nurse, she worked with T.B. Sanatorium and Children’s Psychiatric Hospital. She graduated from Jellico High School, Jellico, TN. After high school, she trained in Gainesville, GA for Western Union Telegraph Company. She was a telegrapher during the train wreck on Jellico Mountain in 1944 that killed military troops, and at Oak Ridge Atomic Energy Research where the atomic bomb (Hiroshima/Nagasaki) was developed. She traveled Northern Kentucky and Southern Tennessee, where she met her late husband, Walter Burris. They had three sons, William Michael Burris (Faith), Samuel Nathan Burris (Debbie), Steven Anthony Burris (Judy). She always wanted to be a nurse and while her children were in school, she enrolled in Northern Kentucky Vocational School, took classes at Hughes High School in pharmacology. She took classes in Basic Coding Course in Indianapolis, IN. She also taught Sunday school for 30 years. She received a 50 year pin from the Eastern Star. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leonard and Alexander Abrams. She is survived by her sons; granddaughters, Julie Stephens, Lisa Long, Connie Workman; 6 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; sister, Irene Leikin of Chicago, IL; and long time, helpful friend, Jim Noel.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to Sunrise Children’s Services 300 Hope St. Mt. Washington, KY 40047 or Erlanger Church of Christ 458 Graves Ave. Erlanger, KY 41018.

Visitation:
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 9 from 10 AM – 12 PM with services following at 12 PM at Stith Funeral Homes 7500 US Highway 42 Florence, KY 41042.
