Roxie McCown Stephens, 94, of Florence, KY, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Villasprings Health Care Center, Erlanger, KY. Roxie was born on March 7, 1918 on Fedscreek, Pike County in Eastern Kentucky. She was the first child of Tom and Cleo Miller Farley. She was graduated from Fedscreek High School and started both her college and her teaching career the following school year. She married Herbert Ross McCown in Prestonburg, KY on November 5, 1938. She maintained her teaching certificate by continuing to take college courses as she taught. She attended Pikeville College, Morehead State Teachers College, University of Kentucky – Northern Center and was graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in August, 1960 (two months after her son Herb graduated from UK. She taught school in Kentucky in Fedscreek, Elkhorn City, and Bellevue for a total of 21 years. Then, she taught in the Cincinnati Public School system at Whittier Elementary for another 21 years. She was a long and faithful member of Florence Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She quilted for many years with the ladies quilting circle at Florence Christian Church. She loved sewing, quilting, and collecting glassware and dolls. She loved traveling and was able to visit all 50 states in her many travels. She also loved poetry, leaving many of her compositions to remember and honor her memory. Some of her favorite poems will be read at her funeral service. She leaves a legacy of a large close-knit family that will miss her acutely, but will always remember her for the wonderful influence she had on all of us. Roxie is survived by her Children and Spouses Herb and Linda McCown, Mike and Jan McCown, Grandchildren and Spouses Steve and Amy McCown, Janet and Thomas Davis, Kathy and Raymond Tydlacka, and Denise and Ryan McCarty, Great Grandchildren and Spouses Roxanne and Brandon McCullough, Shannon and Steven Gutierrez, Amy and Ryan Barnes, Bridgette and Lee Taing, Adam Griffin, and Andy Griffin and Great-Great Grandchildren Kiersten Williams, Brandon McCullough Jr., Anthony Gutierrez, Dominic Gutierrez, Liliana Gutierrez, Brenna Barnes, Alison Barnes, and Koby and Orlando Taing (Twins). Additional survivors include Brothers and Spouses Tom and Anna Jewell Farley, Lena Farley, fellow members of Florence Baptist Church, friends at Beechgrove Baptist Church, and her many friends and neighbors. Roxie was preceded in death by Husband Herbert Ross McCown (married 40 years), Husband Willard L. Stephens (married 22 years), Parents Tom and Cleo (Miller) Farley, Daughter Stephanie Busher, Grandson Wayne Busher, Brother Everett Farley, Brother Ernest Farley, and Sister Bertha Hamilton.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger, KY.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 297 Buttermilk Pike, Ft. Mitchell, KY 41017 or Beechgrove Baptist Church, 450 Independence Station Rd., Independence, KY 41051.

Visitation will be from 6 – 8 P.M., Friday, February 8 at the funeral home.

Funeral Service will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 9 at Stith Funeral Homes, 7500 U.S. 42, Florence, KY 41042.
