Obituary for Thomas "Tom" Abernathy
Thomas “Tom” Abernathy, known by his close friends as “Abbo”, age 86, passed away on December 28, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. He was born on June 7, 1935 in Covington, Kentucky. Tom graduated from Holmes High School and attended the University of Kentucky extension in Northern Kentucky. As a youth his friends remember what an amazing Knothole Baseball catcher he truly was when you watched him play, he was a real “Hall of Famer.” Tom lived most of his life in Florence, except for his time in the U.S. Air Force. Following his time in the military, he worked for more than 35 years as a computer manager at R.L. Polk & Co. in Cincinnati, OH. In post-retirement from R.L. Polk, he enjoyed playing golf and working outdoors as Course Marshall for Boone Links. He was a member of St. Paul Church in Florence and anyone who knew or met him was touched by his kindness and mild temperament. He was a great husband, a fantastic father, and a best friend to all. Tom was also often referred to as “Bowie” because of his time as the Commissioner of the Florence Lions Club Softball league. He coached the St. Paul Cub Scout baseball team and numerous Little League baseball teams. Tom gave his time freely to coach the St. Paul’s boys’ basketball team and the R.A. Jones Middle School girls’ basketball team. For those who knew Tom well they knew he was a die-hard University of Kentucky basketball fan as well as the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. Tom is survived by his wife Jean of 56 years, son George and his wife Pam, daughter Karen Murray and her husband Joseph, and his four grandchildren April Fetz, George Abernathy, J’aime Jo and Jack Thomas Murray, and his ever-faithful dog Trey. A visitation will be held on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 4 – 6 PM at Stith Funeral Home, 7500 US 42, Florence, KY 41042. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 1 PM at St. Paul Church, 7301 Dixie Highway, Florence, KY 41042 followed by the burial ceremony at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger, KY at 2 PM.
